DISCOVER ONE OF CAYMAN’S AMAZING TREASURES
Strange as it may seem, there is really a place called “Hell” in Cayman’s paradise.
Located in the district of West Bay on Grand Cayman, Hell is a unique natural wonder of rugged blackened limestone outcropping. The jagged formations are a result of millions of years of geological evolution, due to acid rain and consumption of the rock by carbonate-loving organisms. This erosion has left an eerie and desolate looking landscape earning this location its highly appropriate name. The rocks are estimated to be 10 to 15 million years old.
Visitors have been flocking here for decades, for bragging rights that they have “been to Hell and back” or have simply taken someone’s advice to “go to Hell!”
Naturally, the ‘Devil’ roams at Hell and no visit is complete without a photo taken with him, you may also catch a glimpse of an “Angel” while on site.
A postcard dispatched from Hell Post Office is also a good way to share a memorable visit to this site.
Hell is located on lands owned by the Cayman Islands Government, as well as on adjoining areas, which are privately owned and offers a similar experience.

My boyfriend and I had such an amazing time on this tour and we owe that to our awesome tour guide/ driver, Wilmot. He was so knowledgeable and laid back—great... read more sense of humor too. He did a wonderful job showing us the ins and outs of the island. I highly recommend him for your trip! 🙂
July 24, 2019This was a nice spot to visit on Grand Cayman Island if you don't expect too much. They have a post office, a gift shop and free restrooms.
These... read more are limestone rocks known as a phytokarst. The rocks have been eroded by acid rain and carbonate loving organisms.
March 26, 2020Hell is located on Hell Road in West Bay. This area may be reached by taking the public bus from Georgetown. Buses which run on this route include WB2 and... read more WB3. Buses travel to the turtle farm, then Botswain Bay Road or Fountain Road, towards Hell Road. There are three gift shop areas which provide access to the Hell attraction. The first is to the far left, and is the original and oldest gift shop at the site. The predominantly red gift shop, has the words "Welcome to Hell" on the roof.
This gift shop was originally a post office between 1962-1985, and postcards "from hell", can still be purchased here. It is also known as 'the devils hangout". On the northern side of the building are two areas with spaces for you to place your head. One is a painting of the devil and the other of an angel. The main entrance to the gift shop is the eastern section of the building. On two sides of the building, you can take photos of "welcome to hell" painted in yellow against a red background. As you walk through the car park toward the lime stones which are the main attraction, look out for the hand painted sign which has "Devils Parking Only".
There is really not much to see, as a field of black lime stones doesn't really offer great photo ops. There are two wooden viewing areas. The area to the left offers the better views, and if you look carefully, you will see a wooden carving of the devil amongst the lime stones. The section to the right has a sculpture of the devil on the wooden platform. The sculpture is chained to the rails of the platform, and is a great photo op. It unfortunately needs painting, so is not in great condition now.
The second area has the current Hell Post Office, with three gift shops to the right. This is the more regularly visited area due to the spacious parking spaces and clean bathrooms. Photos are better here than the older gift shop. An expected cut out of the devil stands on the viewing area where you can place your head for a unique photo.
The third section is to the right, and is an orange arched opening which states “welcome to hell”. There is a gift shop here, and to the right a “Heaven Strawmarket”, which was closed when I visited. The real attraction here is the path to the left of the building which leads directly to the “Hell stones”. The expected cut out of the devil is also found here, but stay away from the wooden viewing area to the right, which is in need of repair. This area offers fantastic photos, as you are on the same level with the stones. Note that you are not allowed to walk on the stones, as there is wildlife living amongst them, and there is risk of injury from the sharp stones. To the right, the stones become covered by beautiful green vegetation which makes a great contrast for a photo.
The rock formation is said to be millions of years old. The natural rocks, known as phytokarst, have been eaten away by algae and ravaged by the elements over many years to create the black pointed shapes.

Can't wait to receive my post cards with a post mark from hell.
